Montrezl Harrell - Bigger than Basketball

Montrezl Harrell is a great representation of a passionate, motivated, NBA player and entrepreneur who is determined to use his platform to inspire the youth.

One of his entrepreneurial endeavours is the Montrezl Harrell Youth Foundation, which benefits at-risk youth. Earlier this season he hosted its inaugural community event where kids worked on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities and also had the opportunity to play the NBA 2K console game.

Another event Harrell hosted this past season was the Children for Entrepreneur-Building Workshop. At the event, kids were challenged to present on-the-spot business ideas, and they received positive feedback from him.

“I think it’s going to be good for them to start early. Everything that I do is geared towards something. It is important for me to be here and help them understand that these are the kind of steps they take to get to where they want to be. I believe this is something that will help them down the road,” Said Harrell.

The events stem from the fact that he sees himself having a mission that is bigger than basketball, and that is to give young kids hope for the future. Harrell wants the youth to understand that whatever their dreams or goal are, they have it in them to accomplish them if they put their minds to it.

When asked if he plans to help out older kids, Harrell says: “My initiatives are about helping young people in general. I’m not that much older than a lot of teenagers out here, I’m only 25. I strongly believe that anybody can do anything they want to do as long as they have a good work ethic and never give up on what they want to do. I’m from a small town and small city and I simply never gave up on what I wanted to do with my life and the dreams I want to pursue. That’s what I want my foundation to be about."

Harrell also recently launched a clothing line called Never Believe You Can’t (NBYC), and just by the name alone, it seems likely that it will catch the attention of many-a-youth.

He states that not everyone will have the opportunity to play professional sports, so motivating kids to showcase their creative talents is equally important. Harrell stresses that he is committed to inspiring young people to chase their dreams relentlessly.
